I've glimpsed some of what you describe. Having spent lots of time in Toronto, New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami. I find that I get a good sense of how things really are by where people go (or are accepted to be/think they can be) and where they aren't. Always seems like the people praising the "diversity" of the Bay Area are not terribly brown and gloss over the *economic* and *social* gap that separates them from those "diverse peoples". I did find that some particularly nasty stereotypes live quite expressively among a suprising number of people who claim to be liberal, non-racists, but I think that's common to all of the US. The West coast just isn't "thought" of as being a place where that exists because of the whole confrontation vs. passive-aggressive style difference. Or how he is followed by white boys, and then they try to force conversations, after he has clearly communicated that he was not interested. It is ridiculous out here! from what i see, there could possibly be no true love here. it's just alot of fucking going on, and misunderstandings, between blacks and other races. this place is definitely not diverse. with diversity comes respect and tolerance for the others' differences. They just want blacks to perform like what they see on tv - and are accumstomed to blacks being anit-ethnocentric. With this current generation of twentysomethings in particular, they expect (and even demand!!) that black men act like 50 cent. If not you will face peer pressure and harrassment, like your boss constantly attempting to call you out of your name, and then bringing drum sticks to work several weeks later because you refused to be called QuestLove (from the roots) - yes believe it!! It happened. Back east, no one expects you to act like anything. They just don't like you, but NEVER do they jump in your face and so directly and outlandishly insult you. Back east it is more understated, but still direct. how could a black man marry a white woman, and endure racism? How could they sleep with the enemy? And then (on several occasions) assume a stance towards me in public, as if I pose a threat to their safety!! OMG, this is pure betrayal. If one more black man tries to grab my attention by scowling at me, and once I notice him grabs his white or asian woman in front of me, I am going to puke! I think they actually get angry at me for being confident, and not paying them any attention, or being mad at them. - their partnership doesn't cause the uproar that they possibly look for from black women. I have NO respect for these black men the bay area. we cant stand it out here! we are leaving early next year. The Bay Area Just doesnt come to mind. Places like New York and Los Angeles are what I think of when I think of many different cultures living in one area. As far as a higher quality of life. I dont see black or latinos experiencing a higher quality of life there. In fact I know many people who are in jobs that pay awesome wages, but they are still being priced out fo the Bay Area. I dont see the Bay Area, especially San Francisco as a diverse area. I am not making this observation from someone who just visits there. I'm living in Oakland, California. The Bay Area is one of the MOST diverse places on earth. Racism doesn't dance in sheets here, but economic racism is HUGE ... and getting bigger. Here are just a few points that I'd love for 'yall to just ponder on: 1. Quote: "A business should remake itself when it is at the peak of its success. Change is the only thing we KNOW will happen ... yet, black folks (esp. black men) continue to hold their heads in the sand ... denial ... a doomed ostrich hiding from the upcoming storm. 3. China and India cannot get enough educated, Sharp minds to fuel their growth. Still, they are standing on the runway, ready to fly. Soon they will become the world's biggest economic powers. Multinationals are just waiting. When that happens, they will pull money out of the U.S. economy like mad. (Remember Bush and his gang trying to get Social Security money to prop up our economy?) [NOTE: In Oakland, more blacks are dropping out of High School than graduating. Choices + Values = Future] 4. It's far too late to be angrily mumbling that "Mexicans need to go back where they came from." The Jinni is out of the bottle. They are eating our lunch and soon, many more white folks lunch too. They are showing us where our game is weak. 5. "My enemy - my friend" say the Buddhist. God told gave us two main instructions ... Love God and love your neighbor ... even when he doesn’t love you back. We have some powerful lessons to RE-learn. Chief amongst those lessons is the fact that all these once poor Asians and Mexicans are now driving the cars we used to drive, living in the houses our homeless asses used to live in, and working in the jobs we used to complain about and would die to have back. How'd they do it? Yeah ... they built a better mouse trap. Provided a better service, and pooled their money. They lived together when they needed to. Supported each other economically, physically, emotionally, intellectually and CULTURALLY. 6. WHY are we taking up Prince Machiavelli's agenda (Google it if you don’t know) and turning ourselves into "Thugs" that destroy any and ALL business hopes in our own community, kill and terrorize our own people (esp. the nerds we need to hold close to our bosom) and create hatred between the sexes? WHY? WHY are we doing the Klan's work for them?? 7. An East Indian engineer who runs a computer chip manufacturing company recently told me that "America needs creativity. There will increasingly be more jobs out-sourced over seas. If you're going to start a company, it needs to hire at least 10,000 people to make change." He has been trained to look at the high end ... but have you looked into the world's new micro loan industry? There are POWERFUL ways to make change happen on the small end too. Disaffected youth ALL OVER THE WORLD look at disaffected people here in the U.S. and many emulate our actions. We can help engineer POWERFUL changes for ourselves and others. "He or she who doesn’t engineer his or her own destiny, will have his destiny engineered for him." What do you think the plans of the super rich are for you? 9. WE NEED TO STOP BEING BLACK-WHITE MEN !!! AHHaaHHHaaahh!! God wants every one to be his or her AUTHINTIC selves. We do NOT need to: a.) Huck-a-buck to the world. I assert that the biggest obstacles to change for the black man and woman today is: a.) The inability to work together. We have to become "brothers" and "sisters" again and cease being "niggas." b.) Denial or the Fear of Change c.) The inability to see what our true demons are. We're so busy trying to be *special* and defending Snoop Dawg that we can't even SEE that the things we've come to value most are killing us. Going to the night club tonight?
